Mezes are an integral part of the dining experience in Middle Eastern cultures. The word meze means ‘snack’ or ‘taste’. They are traditionally served at the beginning of a multi-course meal, but can also be enjoyed as a side dish or an accompaniment to wrapps or pita. We love to top our Chicken Shawarma with these tasty sides. There is nothing better than warm pita smeared with yogurt. Then topped with crispy chicken shawarma and finished off with tangy red onions and this tomato and cucumber salad. Mmmmm….

Tomato and Cucumber Salad with Feta

Tomato and Cucumber Salad with Feta

Nothing pairs better with our delicious Chicken Shawarma than this Tomato and Cucumber Salad.

Ingredients

  • 1 cucumber, peeled and diced
  • 1/2 clove garlic, minced
  • 2 large, ripe tomatoes, diced
  • 1/4-1/2 cup Feta cheese, crumbled
  • 4 tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon Aleppo red pepper flakes
  • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
  • pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the cucumber, garlic, tomato, and Feta.
  2. Sprinkle with chopped parsley and the red pepper flakes, and drizzle with olive oil.
  3. Toss well to combine.
  4. Salt to taste.
  5. Let marinate for at least 15 minutes.

Notes

Serve at room temperature or chilled. This pairs perfectly with our Chicken Shawarma recipe.

Sumac Spiced Red Onions

Marinated in red wine vinegar, these onions are a deliciously tangy and sweet side to our famous Chicken Shawarma recipe.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Additional Time 15 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp red wine vinegar or white vinegar
  • 1 tsp sumac
  • pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Combine thinly sliced onions with red wine vinegar and sumac.
  2. Toss to coat evenly.
  3. Let marinate for 15 minutes.
  4. Salt to taste
